"Bringing both sides together"

SALTO-YOUTH EuroMed has launched a serie of educational reports. Each issue is dedicated to a particular training course in details. They are intended for you to use as a ‘resource pack’ of methods and activities for youth workers dealing with the kind of issues and activities which we looked at during the trainings. They also aim to increase transferability and promote methods used to develop quality in projects.

Issue 8: Let's meet the three cultures

The three cultures, Christianity, Islam and Judaism, have been present in Europe since early times. Europe today reflects the rich and intrinsic relations between the cultures along the times, showing in itself meeting points as well as the result of conflicts along the years.

This educational report compiles 4 training courses carried out by Salto-Youth EuroMed on the thematic "The 3 cultures":
- 1st in Cordoba in 2004, the focus was cultural, rather than religious - how was it, how is it and how can it be, using the past as a starting point,
- 2nd in Jerusalem in 2005, due to the uniqueness of the place, the focus was on the history of the city and the three monotheistic religions,
- 3rd in Antwerp in 2006, the Training course was linked to the political power and the communities, the connivance of the communities within a multinational city,
- 4th in Paris in 2007, focusing on laïcité vis-à-vis the three cultures. The challenge was to tackle from the first time the four topics - four cultures living in Paris in peace nowadays.

The four approaches are described and compiled in this educational report to bring you the more complete glance on the three cultures in Euromed context.

Issue 7: WOMEN IN EUROMED - A kaleidoscopic sea of roles and places

The role of women is one of the priorities of the Euromed Youth Programme. The role of women has seen several engagements worldwide for the eradication of discrimination and the fulfilment of a concrete equality of man and woman both in public and in private life. Women in many countries continue to have unequal legal status with regards to marriage, divorce, property, inheritance, national laws, traditions, customs and stereotypical attitudes towards the role of women. Salto-Youth EuroMed Resource Centre and the Spanish National Agency for the Youth Programme willed to provide the opportunity to tackle this topic and organised a training course in Spain in 2006 about the place and roles of women in Euromed.
This report reflects and shares useful information on Women in Euromed - A kaleidoscopic sea of roles and places.

Issue 6: TOTEM - Training of trainers in Euro-Mediterranean region

TOTEM (Training of Trainers in Euro-Med) is one of the two long-term training courses on training developed at institutional level within the Euro-Med area.
TOTEM has been designed to support the learning of those youth workers and youth leaders - already experienced in Euro-Med - who manifested their will/need to develop their competences as trainers in this field.
More specifically, TOTEM responds to the need of developing specific EURO-MED-related competences in the field of training and tries to address a very specific target group of candidates. TOTEM is part of the SALTO Euro-Med training strategy and constitutes a complementary training course to TATEM (Training for Active Trainers in Euro-Med), the later addressing those who are already involved in training activities within Euro-Med.
This TOTEM report aims to respond to the need of transferability of training concepts and experience with a dedicating part of its implementation to the self-reflected acquisition of the necessary competences.

Issue 4: "Education and Civilisation. Influence on EVS" educational report
Marrakech, Morocco 4 - 12 April 2004
Cairo, Egypt, 23 - 31 July 2005
Venice, Italy, 27 May - 1 June 2006

In this report:
Education and Civilisation have been overlapping since ever. Every civilisation contributed to the cultural history of the world in the creation and the reproduction of societiesas well as education. In the frame of the EuroMed YOUTH programme this relation is even more remarkable. One of its actions, EuroMed voluntary service (EVS), is not developed as much as it could be.
The educational approaches and attitudes are not identical, not only on both sides of the Mediterranean Sea but also between countries of the same geographical area. This course aims at reflecting on the influence of civilisations in the educational systems and on the necessary conditions for implementing a qualitative voluntary service project (Action 2) in the frame of a Euro-Mediterranean co-operation. The educational report has a double objective: to show the reader what was made in Marrakesh, in Cairo and in Venice as well as to involve the reader in a more personal reflection on the interactions between civilisations, education and pedagogy.

Issue 3: "Common Memory - Common Heritage" educational report (1.5 MB)
Tozeur, Tunisia, 26 June - 4 July 2004
Athens, Greece, 19 June - 27 July 2005

In this report:

"And finally, just as all rivers go to the sea, all the problems involved in the study of tales must finally lead to the solution of the essential issue which has never been explained, that of the similarity of tales all over the world. How can we explain the fact that the story of the queen frog in Russia, Germany, France, India, New Zealand and as told by the American Indians is the same, given that no contact between these peoples can be historically proved?"

Vladimir Propp (1928) "Morphology of the tale".

The general aim of these courses was to encourage participants to use an intercultural learning experience to highlight what is common to both Mediterranean shores: to investigate heritage, inheritance, values and memory starting from examples of popular fairy tales, consolidate Euro-Mediterranean co-operation, reinforce the quality of the EUROMED YOUTH Programme within an intercultural context, develop participants' skills in cultural management and drive their active participation in the Euro-Mediterranean process.

During these courses, participants shared, compared and analysed the common points and specificities of tales they brought from home. Together, they created new tales in a spirit of cooperation and partnership, using their common values, culture and heritage as a starting point, instead of building on their differences.

Issue 2: "Peace Education" educational report (0.7 MB)
Melilla, Spain, 6 -12 June 2005

In this report:

"A culture of peace will be achieved when citizens of the world understand global problems, have the skills to resolve conflicts and struggle for justice non-violently, live by international standards of human rights and equity, appreciate cultural diversity, and respect the Earth and each other. Such learning can only be achieved with systematic education for peace."

Hague Appeal for Peace Global Campaign for Peace Education

This seminar on "Peace Education" aims at developping - in an environment of tolerance, care and respect - skills, attitudes and knowledge with co-operative and participatory learning methods. One way to meet the challenges of peace education is to build bridges of support among participants. The notion "think globally, act locally" is central to educating for a culture of peace in that it links theory with practice, international issues to individual efforts.

Issue 1: "Jump Into EuroMed Youth Exchanges" educational report (2 MB)
September 2003 - October 2004

In this report:

The Euromed Youth Programme implemented since 2000 a great number of youth exchange projects. A wide series of training courses has been offered from 2001 till 2005 by SALTO Youth EuroMed Resource Centre. So, why another type of training course ?

It seems that youth exchanges in the framework of the Euromed Youth Programme requires a great range of skills and competencies in youth leading and group leading. In order to strenghten the quality of projects, it is important to increase the qualification of youth leaders and youth workers. They will not only set up these exchanges but also lead them.

This report invites you to follow us and also to "Jump" into the Euromed Youth Exchanges.
It aims at providing to youth workers from both sides of the Mediterranean sea enough information and tools for the implementation of a Euromed youth exchange, from the "application phase" to "the group leading skills", from "the project idea" to "the project evaluation".

This long document about a "long term training course" offers the opportunity to benefit from this experience, which was successful on quality and quantity: five "Action 1" projects (Youth Exchanges) were prepared, developed, applied, funded and implemented.
